British Dragons Paddle and Pirouette to Victory
The Divas is a unique event held every year to celebrate women paddlers and raise awareness of breast cancer.
On the water, female 10 crew teams battled it out in the The Henley Group Inter-International Business Community Race. The competition was fierce, but after 3 rounds the British Dragons’ Divas emerged victorious narrowly beating strong Filippino and Gaelic teams. In the boat, and paddling for each other were Alison, Gemma (in her last appearance before returning to England), Nicky, Carien, Gill, Eelin, Jen, Pam, Amelia and Kate. The biggest girl of them all, Paul, steered them home.
The second race of the day was the The Henley Group Breast Cancer Awareness Race where the teams were mixed up to form new women’s 20 crew teams. Although the cause was the real winner, British Dragons Captain Nicky had the honour of leading the victorious boat home.
With the paddling completed, it was time for the day’s highlight:
the Drag catwalk show. For weeks, in almost total secrecy, the British Dragons’ danseur nobles had practised their soubresauts and mastered the changement in order to bring forth a performance of Swan Lake that would live forever in the hearts of the enchanted audience. There were also creditable performances from the Gaelic Fembots and Okinawan Belly Dancers, but the grande dames bourréed to victory.
