Hello Paddlers

RACES – REGISTER NOW!   |   MARDI GRAS CHALLENGE   |   ANNUAL TEAM MEETING   |   MR500 RACE   |   BARBARIANS TO BORACAY   |

1) RACES – REGISTER NOW!

The following races are now open:

Mardi Gras Challenge – 25th February 2012
MR500 – 24th & 25th March 2012
Boracay – 26th, 27th, 28th April 2012 (Singapore Barbarians event)

If you wish to take part in any – or non – of these races then please register online now at:

www.britishdragonboat.com/race-registration/

Please complete the registration even if you are not participating in ANY of the races.  This will ensure that we know your status and do not have to contact you to check!

The committee are also currently finalising venues and dates for a number of overseas races for the team this year.  As soon as these are confirmed I will let you know the dates and likely costs so that you can make early plans to join in!

2) MARDI GRAS CHALLENGE

This is an annual novelty event hosted by the American Dragons for the International dragon boat community in Singapore.

Where:….. Kallang Riverside Park
When:….. Saturday 25th February (afternoon and evening – exact reporting time will be announced soon)
Price:….. $30 (payable now to Mel or Mifie)

A carnival atmosphere prevails as paddlers are formed into squads (with paddlers from the other teams) and race around the local waters completing wacky challenges along the way.   The event is followed by a BBQ party and beers on the beach for all the teams. A not-to-be-missed event!

Each team member should be in British kit and can borrow a team paddle and life jacket (if they don’t have their own).

This event will replace training and is NOT open to first-time paddlers.

Registration closing date: Sunday 19th February 2012.

3) ANNUAL TEAM MEETING

It is time for our Annual Team Meeting where we enjoy drinks and supper together as we review our successes in the past year, look forward to the 2012 racing season and of course present the team awards ceremony.  We will also be electing our incoming committee for 2012.   So please save the date.

Where:….. RedDot at Boat Quay (upstairs)
When:….. Saturday 17th March (7.30pm)

4) MR500 RACE

The MR500 is our first major race event of the season.

Where
:….. Jurong Lake Park (a new venue!)
When:….. Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th March
Price:….. $50 for the race weekend – or $30 if you (or your guest) are just joining for the team dinner on the Sunday evening (payable now to Mel or Mifie)

Registration closing date: Friday 2nd March 2012.

(By the way, it is not the ‘Mister 500’ as this 500 metre race is open to both sexes. The ‘MR’ denoted MacRitchie Reservoir which was the original venue – it has moved around the island since then and this year will be at Jurong Lake – so you can even call it the JL500 if the mood takes you…).

5) BARBARIANS TO BORACAY (Singapore Barbarians)

The Singapore Barbarians are a joint squad (comprised of paddlers from all of the international teams) formed for overseas events.

The Filipino Dragons have in previous years competed at Boracay under their own flag.  However this year I understand that they will join forces with the Barbarian team and so we are currently expecting the contingent to comprise 100 or so paddlers.

All participants pay (in full) for flights, accomodation, event kit and race fees – usually booking flights personally and paying a race fee directly to the Barbarian’s Captain for the other costs of the trip.

Where:….. Boracay
When:….. 26th, 27th, 28th April 2012 (exact dates of trip to be agreed with Singapore Barbarians)
Price:….. To be advised

Please note that any paddlers from the British team wishing to join the Boracay squad will need the endorsement of our team Captain before their registration will be approved with the Barbarian’s.

As we prepare for a busy race season the Team Captain’s have asked all “missing faces” to get their paddles along to every training from now on!

I look forward to seeing you all at training at the weekend.

All the best,

Philip N. Morgan – Team Secretary
British Dragons
– Singapore
