SINGAPORE RACE DATES | ABU DHABI RACE IN OCTOBER | REGISTER NOW! | IT’S BEACH BBQ TIME | TEAM NEWS FOR ‘ACTIVE PADDLERS’ NOW ON FACEBOOK | KIT KEEPS COMING
Please put these dates into your diary and register your availability immediately using the online registration link below.
1) SINGAPORE RACE DATES
We now have confirmed dates for all the races we expect to be competing in for the rest of the year:
What: ….. SAVA Sprints
When:….. 8th/9th September 2012
This is one of the signature events of the calendar with men’s, women’s and mixed team events over 250m. Please register immediately for this one!
What: ….. Singapore River Regatta
Where:….. Boat Quay
When:….. 3rd/4th November 2012
This is the premier fixture of the racing season. The British Dragons took GOLD in the Inter-International Business Community Mixed race (22 crew boat) last year and so we are the team that the others will be trying hard to beat.
What: ….. German Maneuver Cup
When:….. 24th November 2012
2) ABU DHABI RACE IN OCTOBER
It’s officiial! The British Dragons are planning to send a squad to compete in October in Abu Dhabi – but it does rely on getting enough commitments now to make the trip feasible.
What: ….. Shangri-La Abu Dhabi Dragon Boat Festival
Where:….. Abu Dhabi
When:….. 25th – 28th October 2012
Cost:….. $1200 approximately for flights and hotels (there will be a hotel deal at the event but as yet it has not been released).
Rob Cooke (our International Rep) tells me that the trip will require one Singapore Public holiday and one additional day of annual leave to take part (in addition there may be an opportunity to stay on with other team members for a mini-holiday beyond the core race dates). The race categories include:
12/20crew Mixed 200m, 500m and 1.5km
20 crew Open 500m
20 crew Women 500m
Last year there were 65 teams competing and at the conclusion of the event on the Friday evening there is a complimentary party on the beach with buffet dinner, DJ, etc.
If you would like to participate then please register using the link in the next section.
3) REGISTER NOW!
So that the Team Captains can plan ahead for all these competitions it is important for all paddlers to register online now. Even if you know you cannot compete in one or more of them then please take a few moments to register as a “No” – and if you are unsure about your likely availability for a particular race then click “Maybe” (and give a brief explanation in the comments box):
4) IT’S BEACH BBQ TIME
Here’s another advance date for your diary:
What: ….. Beach BBQ
When:….. 21st July 2012 (6.00pm – after training)
More news on this social event in the next bulletin.
5) MORE TEAM NEWS FOR ‘ACTIVE PADDLERS’ ON FACEBOOK
A new area for “Active Paddlers” has been set up on facebook. This is in response to requests for event dates to be announced on facebook.
In future when we announce event dates in this bulletin (and on the website homepage and website calendar) we’ll also post these dates simultaneously on this new facebook group for “Active Paddlers” too – though (as always) you’ll still sign up for events on the usual online registration form on the team website. We’ll link to that form as well to make it really easy though, so the only thing that will continue to be difficult will be the paddling (and winning) aspect of being in the team!
You can go to the Active Paddler facebook group (and join it) here:
In future whether you rely on these email bulletins, the website homepage, the website calendar or the “Active Paddlers” facebook group you should get key team announcements of dates available simultaneously so you’ll never miss out whichever news source you prefer!
Please note that the existing ‘British Dragon Boat Singapore Facebook Fan Page’ will continue as a general ‘Supporters’ page where anyone can “Like” the page and get team gossip, photos, etc. delivered directly into their facebook news feed as previously. This fan page can be found at:
(At the time of writing 380 people had already “Liked” this page – so please “Like” it too if you haven’t already!).
6) KIT KEEPS COMING
Gill Saxon (our Kit and Equipment Manager) has been very busy of late and has recently taken delivery of two new boat covers. These are wider than the previous ones and Gill reminds us that when covering the boats it is essential that the overlap on each side is the same and that the straps are fastened tightly so that the “hoops” will keep the covers correctly raised and prevent rainwater seeping in.
Additional new red Personal Flotation Devices are also on order (we’ll finally be able to put the old grey ones into reserve) and a fresh stock of racing and drinking shirts is also expected soon. We now have team stickers at $3 each too. Please ask Gill if you want to buy some some of these.
You can view and order all team kit at:
Do please take the trouble to register your intentions for the upcoming races – particularly the SAVA Sprints – as soon as possible to make life a little bit easier for the Captains. And if you do have any questions about the proposed Abu Dhabi trip then just ask Rob Cooke at training.
See you at the weekend,
All the best,
Philip N. Morgan – Team Secretary
