3) TRAINING TAKES A BREAK
After the excitement of the 10Km race and the SAVA Sprints race weekend the team is currently taking a brief hiatus from training. There will be NO training at Kallang this weekend or at the pool on Wednesday 19th September.
Training will recommence on Saturday 22nd September 2012 at 3.30pm at Kallang.
4) CRIME CONTINUES AT KALLANG
Low crime certainly doesn’t mean no crime – as the Canadian team have recently been finding out to their cost!
A few weeks ago some $300 worth of beer was stolen from their locked cooler at Kallang – it seems a paddle had been used to prise it open. As if this grievous loss wasn’t enough to have to contend with another brazen robber actually crept up to the cages whilst the team was preparing for training and snatched a bag. Luckily the miscreant was pursued and dropped the bag whilst fleeing.
In view of this please do NOT bring valuables to training at Kallang. The cages are NOT secure and thieves obviously see the site as a place which bestows rich pickings. I recall that a few years ago a number of bags were taken from the (locked) British cage whilst we were out on the water. One couple lost credit cards, passports, cash and even their housekeys. As they were newly arrived in Singapore this doubtless caused them a great deal of anguish and inconvenience.
When I come to training I put a few ten dollar notes, my door key and my EZ-Link card into a ziplock bag and keep it in my pocket whilst out on the water. Unless these criminals take to armed piracy on the water then they won’t be getting anything from me!
Of course it seems that I’ll also need to keep a paddle with me on land at all times too for fending off the attackers – who are probably lying in wait behind every bush at Kallang these days…
So to be very clear: as a team we do not have insurance for any items brought to training and lost or stolen. Also it seems inevitable that if you do leave anything of value in the cages then eventually it will be stolen. It is now simply a question of when…
5) LADIES TAKE BRONZE AT SAVA SPRINTS
The annual International SAVA Sprints took place on the weekend of the 8th and 9th of September at Lower Seletar Reservoir and saw the British Dragons take home a haul of medals in this 250m event.
In the “Premier Mixed” race on the Saturday we raced through the heats and came first in a dead heat with the American Dragons in the repechage (with a time of 1:13:93). We subsequently made it through to the Minor Final to take FIRST place with a time of 1:12:87.
We also fielded a crew in the “Singapore Expatriate Community” event and again qualified for the Minor Final to take another FIRST place with a time of 1:12:63.
Sunday saw the “Premier Women” event and the British Ladies battled through to the Grand Final winning a well deserved BRONZE with a time of 1:21.95 (narrowly beaten by the Filipino Dragons and Singapore Polytechnic who took first and second place respectively – by being a mere fraction of a second ahead!).
As always the SAVA Sprints provided some very competitive paddling, the traditional downpour (and disco dancing in the rain!) and the chance for several new team members to compete in their very first races and win medals. All in all it was a great weekend and was followed by a most enjoyable Race Dinner at RedDot Dempsey.
