Register Now for Penang and your complete SAVA Sprints International Race Guide

On September 20, 2014 by Jean-Benoît_Delpy_Bourcart

We are planning to join forces with the German Dragons this December (as “BritGe”) to field a large team to go to the Penang Pesta once again this year.

What: ….. Penang Pesta Dragon Boat Race 2014
Where:….. Penang, Malaysia
When:….. Weekend of 6th-7th December 2014 (flying out on the Friday evening – returning on the Sunday night or perhaps Monday for some)
Costs: ….. $450 (approx) to include flight, 3 star hotel and race fees.

Note that the last Friday flight is around 11pm so even the die-hard worker bees should still be able to make a flight.  If there is a Sunday night after-race party we may have the chance to extend to the Monday – though this would probably mean taking leave on the Monday (and spending an extra night in the hotel).  It will be a choice for each paddler though.

The Penang race has 100m Mixed, Open, Women and Senior plus 2x250m Relay that we can enter so we hope to field a squad of around 30 paddlers (and of course bring back medals to Singapore!).

The approximate costs for Penang include the race fees and group hotel booking (and include up to $200 for each paddler to book their own flights).
Note that to register for the Penang Pesta you must have previously raced in Singapore with the British Dragons.

All paddlers should register their intentions for Penang (“Yes” / “No” / “Maybe”) before Sunday 28th September 2014.  Here is the link:

Here is your complete guide to the upcoming SAVA Sprints International 2014:

Date: ….. Weekend of 27th and 28th September 2014
Reporting Time: …..  Saturday at 07.15am (prompt!)
Location: ….. Anchorvale Community Club
Getting there: ….. Farmway LRT (then a 5 minute walk to race site)

The races will be held at the waterfront of Anchorvale Community Club (59 Anchorvale Road).

This is a brand new venue for us so please take a few moments to be sure you know where you are heading.  The area was rural until relatively recently – hence the nearest LRT is called “Farmway”.

It is quite a way out of town in the Senkang area in the North-East of Singapore.  It’s much closer to Malaysia than Raffles Place…

Don’t assume it is a few minutes dash in a cab – it isn’t!  If you are coming from the South of Singapore allow at least 30 minutes or more for a Taxi journey.  If you are driving then study your route carefully.  There is paid parking in the CC and some limited free parking opposite the CC.

We are in some of the earliest races so it is very important that you are not late.
The good news is that the race site is easily reached by public transport.  Here’s how:

1) Travel to Sengkang MRT (on the North-East “Purple” Line)

2) Transfer to Platform 2 on the LRT station and head on the West Loop to Farmway LRT on the West Loop (travel anti-clockwise so you only need to go two stops).  If this is your first time on the LRT system then enjoy your trip – from your elevated track you should easily spot Anchorvale CC.

3) Alight at Farmway LRT and walk 400m to Anchorvale Community Club.

Here is Anchorvale CC (it is pretty large and right on the waterfront where we’ll be racing!).  The British Dragons will be sited near to Race Marshalling.

If you are running late or have any “problem” please advise Philip before 07.00am on the Saturday.

Upon arrival on site please report to Mel or Fabien and pay your $50 (if you have not done so already.  This covers race entries, personal registration and photo ID race tag, water and 100 Plus drinks on both days, a Sandwich lunch on the Saturday and the team dinner at London (Boat Quay) on the Sunday evening.

You will be given a photo ID tag which you will need to wear all weekend (if lost the organisers will charge you for a replacement).

All team members must be wearing a team racing shirt and team bandana (or cap) in order to race.  No other shirts or headwear are acceptable.  Remember that footwear is compulsory in the boats.  Please limit valuables to essentials for the weekend as our marquee will not be fully secure.

Times and line-ups for races are subject to constant change so always:

  • Know which event you’re competing in (look at the posted team boat layouts);
  • Stay close to the team marquee;
  • Let the Committee know your whereabouts at all times when NOT close to the team marquee.

Please eat well in the coming week.  Carb load the night before the race (pasta, rice, etc.), get plenty of protein and make sure you bring along your choice of Berocca, Hydration Salts, Energy Gels etc.  Also have a hearty breakfast before setting out so that you will be in good shape for the all-important first heats.

Remember to bring sunblock and water along to the event and please make sure that you hydrate well before and during the weekend.

If this is your first participation in a race weekend then it is important to note that the team arrives together and departs together and stays together throughout (whether you are in particular races or not).  Please do not leave the contingent for any reason without clearing it with a Captain first.
Sunday is our traditional “Pot Luck Lunch” so please plan to bring along nutritious food to share with your team mates.  Pot Luck gives our cooks and bakers a chance to shine.  Salads, cheeses, breads, pizzas, dips, fruits, nuts, desserts, indeed any foods that will give us a tasty boost for racing are welcome.

Our Team Dinner will be held at London (Boat Quay) at 7.30pm on Sunday 28th September.

Please wear your drinking shirt and bring along your team membership card to the team dinner.  The racing may end reasonably early on the Sunday so we should have time to go home and change before the dinner.

Due to the SAVA sprints we will be having “First Friday of the Month” drinks from 6.30pm onwards on Friday 3rd October at London on Boat Quay.  London is about half way along the waterfront at Boat Quay and supporters and guests are all very welcome

Do bring along your London membership card to enjoy a 5% discount on food and drinks (and to ensure that an additional 7% is rebated back to the team!).  Also please wear your team drinking shirt.

Training will take place at Kallang this weekend (20th and 21st September) as usual.  Pool Training will be on Wednesday 24th September at 7.00pm at Farrer Park Swimming Complex.

Please note there will be NO training at Kallang on the weekend of 27th and 28th September (due to the SAVA Sprints races) and we will NOT have Pool Training on Wednesday 1st October.

Our Annual Christmas Dinner will be held at the British Club on Saturday 13th December 2014.  Please save the date.  Further details will be announced in due course.

I look forward to seeing you all a training this weekend as we prepare for the SAVA Sprints International 2014 at Anchorvale CC next weekend.

Best wishes,

Philip N. Morgan – Team Secretary
