About Dragon Boating

Dragon Boating allegedly originated in China in the 3rd Century. The legend is that Dragon Boat festivals were held to commemorate the death by drowning of the great Chinese statesman, patriot and poet Qu Yuan, who threw himself into the Miluo River in protest at the corrupt Government of the day.

Anxious fishermen took to their boats and sought to save him by beating their drums and splashing their paddles on the water to drive away fish and water demons that might eat Qu Yuan. Later they scattered rice the water to ensure the spirit of Qu Yuan would not starve.

This tradition is continued in numerous Dragon Boat festivals around the world. Dragon Boating is said to be the 2nd largest participative sport in the world mainly due to its popularity in China. An estimated 20 million people take part in Dragon Boat festivals in China alone!

Dragon Boating is also now one of the fastest growing sports in the world especially outside of China. Today International Dragon Boat festivals take place all over the world including Singapore, Sydney, Vancouver, London and New York.

About the Team

The British Chamber of Commerce Dragon Boat team was started in April 2000 by Jason Hawkins with the full assistance and support of the British Chamber of Commerce.

Since then, the club has gone from strength to strength with a regular Saturday turn out of over 25 paddlers. We now even practice on Wednesdays.

We have gone through many transitions, a few medals on the way and are getting stronger and stronger each year.

The club is a great way to find other new interests and to meet people from all walks of life.

The Team participates in several races a year, including the Singapore Dragon Boat Regatta, the Singapore River Regatta, SAVA Sprints and MR500 as well as other International Team races & fun events.

We are part of the BritPack, the social branch of the British Chamber of Commerce. The BritPack also runs pub nights, travel and other sporting events.

Although we're called the British team you don't have to be British to join us. We have members from Australia, Belgium, Italy, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Switzerland, and the USA - to name a few!

We are also registered affiliates of the Singapore Dragon Boat Asssociation, which is the main organising body for Dragon Boating in Singapore.
