1) MEN’S CAPTAIN ELECTED

I am delighted to announce that Dan Gill has been elected as our new Men’s Captain.

I am sure you will join with me in wishing Dan every success in his new role and give him every support. Thanks also to both candidates for agreeing to stand and also to all of you who took part in our very first electronic poll – we had a high turnout and the poll ran very smoothly indeed.

Here is a message that our Team Manager has asked me to share with you:

“I personally have to thank both Andy and Nicky for their 6 and 2 years hard work for the team, respectively. They were both great captains and contributed tirelessly to better the team, both on and off the water. Thank you both also for your advice, support and friendship over these past years.

Now please welcome both Dan as your new Men’s Captain, and Pam as your new Ladie’s Captain. I wish them well and look forward to their enthusiasm, passion and input to keep this amazing group of people moving ever forward and upward.

Let’s go get those other teams British Dragons! Your friend and Captain, Paul.”

2) DBS MARINA REGATTA 2013 RACE GUIDE

Here is your complete guide to the DBS Marina Regatta 2013. Please read this guide carefully.

Date:…..Weekend of 18th and 19th May 2013
Reporting Time:…..Saturday at 08.30am (don’t be late – new security checks implemented!)
Location:….. Promontory @ Marina Bay (in front of the Marina Bay Financial District)
Map:….. Map
Getting there:….. Raffles Place MRT on the East/West and North/South lines (about 15 minutes walk) or Bayfront MRT on the Circle Line (about 15 minutes walk via Marina Bay Sands).

Do note that as part of the security measures, there will only be 5 entry points with security checks into the DBS Marina Regatta area. You’re strongly encouraged to wear your participant tags (which you’ll get from the Treasurers on Saturday) which will help to facilitate your re-entry. If your families and friends are coming to support you, do advise them to travel light.

Upon arrival please report to Mel or Fabien and pay your $50 (if you haven’t already). This fee covers race entries, personal registration race tag, water and 100 Plus drinks on both days, lunch sandwiches on the Saturday and the team dinner at London (Boat Quay) on the Sunday evening.

All team members must be wearing a team racing shirt and team bandana (or cap) in order to race. No other shirts or headwear are acceptable. Please wear British Dragons shorts or dark blue or black shorts. Remember that footwear is compulsory in the boats.

If you need to buy kit for the race urgently then email Gill at kit@britishdragonboat.com so that she can bring your order along to the race. Pay in cash on the day.

Please limit valuables to essentials for the weekend and travel light as our marquee will not be fully secure and many thousands of spectators are expected.

Times and line-ups for races are subject to constant change so always:

Know which event you’re competing in (look at the posted team boat layouts);

Stay close to the team marquee;

Let the Committee know your whereabouts at all times when NOT close to the team marquee.

If you are new to racing don’t be tempted to wander off to get a coffee or whatever if you think that you are not in a race – things can quickly change and you might find that you are needed in a boat RIGHT NOW! Plus you will want to attend all the warm-ups, briefings and visualisations so that you are ready to race if you are suddenly called upon (and also to gain valuable experience about what racing entails). If you do need to go anywhere – even for a couple of minutes – then tell the Captains or a committee member. And of course if you are part of the racing team you are expected to remain on hand for the whole weekend.

Please eat well in the days leading up to the race. Carb load the night before the race (pasta, rice, etc.), get plenty of protein and make sure you bring along your choice of Berocca, Hydration Salts, Energy Gels and Bars, etc. Also have a hearty breakfast before setting out so that you will be in good shape for the all-important heats (if we fail to qualify in those then of course we will just sit empty-handed on the shore all weekend politely clapping the teams that have beaten us).

Remember to bring sunblock and water along to the race and please make sure that you hydrate well before and during the weekend.

Supporters and friends are very welcome so do invite them to drop by and say hello!

Please find attached a technical briefing guide (in PDF) kindly provided by SDBA. It is intended for overseas participants and gives maps of the site and some other general orientation about the race itself.

3) CAPSIZE DRILL REMINDER

A capsize is a very rare event in training. But capsizes often do happen in races. If two boats capsize over forty people can be pitched into the water leading to a challenging situation.

If you are in a boat which does capsize then it is no big deal so long as you remember the following crucial words of advice from our Captains:

a) Do Not Panic!

b) Check that your row buddy has bobbed to the surface and is okay (if not raise the alarm and feel under the overturned boat)

c) DO NOT swim to the shore – wait for the attending safety boat(s) to take charge and instruct*

(* This last instruction may leave you thinking “Huh?”, especially if you are in a boat which capsizes just a few metres from the shore and you could swiftly step onto dry land. But a capsize – especially if it involves boats with paddlers from different teams pitched together into the water – can be a very confusing situation for a few minutes. Once a paddler swims off to shore and disappears into the massed crowds watching then the whole thing becomes much more serious as it will be assumed that the person may be missing and this will cause great concern and likely a frantic search. So if you do end up in the water simply stay with your row buddy and check that the paddlers in the rows around you are accounted for and not injured. In this way it will be easy for the Captain and Cox to do a headcount for everyone and let the safety boat know that the whole crew is okay. Remember: stay with your team in a capsize until instructed otherwise).

4) FOOD AND DRINK AT THE RACE WEEKEND

Saturday lunch will be from “Freshly Baked” (tasty sandwiches including vegetarian choices).

Sunday will be our traditional “Pot Luck Lunch” so please plan to bring along some nutritious food to share with the team. This is the chance for our cooking and baking brigade to demonstrate their creative flair in the kitchen.

Our Team Dinner will be held at London (Boat Quay) on Sunday 19th May at 7.30pm. The buffet dinner is included in the race fee. We plan to walk over there at the end of racing on Sunday. Air-con hounds will be relieved to know that we will be upstairs at London so their fur will gently ripple in the breeze of chilled air on offer.

Please bring along your drinking shirt to change into for the Sunday evening team dinner and bring along your London membership card to claim our discount and rebates.

5) SUBMIT YOUR REGATTA PICS AND WIN A $600 DINNER FOR TWO

As you will already have seen, the British Dragons are a featured team in this year’s DBS Marina Regatta and our smiling faces are going viral as you read this!

DBS is offering a chance to win one of three $600 degustation dinners at Singapore’s world-class fine dining restaurant, Restaurant Andre, by sharing your photos from the DBS Marina Regatta on Instagram, Twitter or Vine.

These free platforms are fantastic opportunities reach a wide audience with our team spirit and show Singapore what the British Dragons are all about. So let’s make the most of it! Oh, and you could win the food experience of a lifetime…..

How does it work?

1. Take a pic or create a Vine (6 second video clip that is like a .gif image… google it!) on your smartphone at DBS Marina Regatta that reflects our team. Be creative and fun!

2. Upload that pic to Instagram, Twitter or Vine with the hashtag #DBSMarinaRegatta2013. Hashtags work as a cloud-style content collator – if you don’t include the hashtag, your image won’t be able to be submitted for the big prize.

3. Your picture must be submitted by the end of the regatta programme on Sunday 19 May. You can enter as many times as you like.

It’s that easy!

DBS will announce the winner once the event has wrapped up.

Later we can collate all the submissions and share them on our team Facebook and website.

Happy snapping!

(Thanks to Anna – our Marketing Manager – for the above information).

6) TRAINING BREAK UNTIL WEDNESDAY 29th MAY

Due to the DBS Marina Regatta and Bay Festival races we will take a break in training. We will recommence at 7.00pm on Wednesday 29th May with Pool Training at Farrer Park Swimming complex.

Next week I will send out further information to you about the DBS Marina Regatta “Bay Festival” race that we are competing in on the afternoon of Friday 24th May.

Where:….. London – Boat Quay
When:….. 7.30pm – Sunday 19th May 2013 (we will walk over immediately after the race)

We’ll have a buffet, drinks and lots of fun as we look back over the weekend and celebrate our efforts!

If you haven’t paid already, the Treasurer’s would appreciate receipt of your $50 race fee when you come to training. Supporters or guests can also be registered for the meal ($30 per head payable to Mel or Fabien).

Please wear your drinking shirt for the Team Dinner and do remember to bring along your London membership card so that you can enjoy your member discount (and also ensure that our team rebates are garnered accordingly).

Please register for the race dinner by Saturday 11th May using the link below so that we can finalise the food orders:

2) ROADWORKS AT KALLANG

Please be careful and alert when walking or driving to the boatyard at Kallang. As you will have seen the area now has extensive roadworks underway and even footpaths are subject to upheaval.

The Land Transport Authority is carrying out widening works at Merdeka Bridge and building a “depressed” road at Stadium Road just under the bridge (a somewhat gloomy location which probably explains why it’s not very cheerful!). The staircases leading down from Merdeka Bridge to Stadium Road will not be accessible for the next 12 months it seems so pedestrian access to the boatyard from Nicoll Highway will involve a much longer route if you are ever coming from that direction.

(My thanks to Rob C. for kindly alerting us to this information)

Looking forward to seeing you at training at the weekend!

Yes folks, by popular demand Land Training makes a breathless return!

In fact Land Training never really went away – but in future we’ll be having an increased emphasis on Tabata Training (see http://tabatatraining.org/?p=18 for more details). This is to help underpin our core fitness ahead of the various races we are preparing for.

As usual the session this week will be held at the entrance steps to the Indoor Stadium which are directly over the road from the exit from Stadium MRT (CC6 on the Circle Line). Here is the location: http://goo.gl/maps/mxTpX

Please note that there are no showers at the site but toilets are available for changing.

If you are driving you can use Car Park E. Please wear your team kit and Trainers (or Running Shoes) for the Land Training and bring water along.

3) SUNDAY PADDLE AND BRUNCH

4) NO TRAINING ON MAY DAY

Thank you for your great response on our plans to go overseas to race. Based on your feedback we have decided to go to the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival from 21 to 23rd of June.

Look forward to 3 days of racing in the heart of Hong Kong in Victoria harbor!

The races will be over 250 and 500m and there are many categories to race in, including a Fancy Costume race! The weekend will be concluded by a race dinner and party on Sunday night!

If you registered to race in June you will by now have received a separate email from the International Rep. requesting your passport details and outlining other administrative details of the trip. Please act on that email immediately as time is tight!

Please note that to be included in the Hong Kong squad you must pay your $150 deposit to the Treasurer’s by Sunday 21st April 2013.

2) ST. GEORGE AND THE DRAGON (BOAT)

On Sunday 21st April we will celebrate St. George’s day with a St. George and the Dragon (Boat) paddle event and BBQ.

Set in the time of the Crusaders, you and your team will be given the challenge to slay the dragon and save the princess. Be ready to surrender your swords and pick up your paddles as we joust for success.

Please dress up for the occasion – we will be in need of Knights, Kings and Ladies – and prepare to go to battle.

For those registered please be at the cage at Kallang at 10.30am on Sunday (there is no Sunday training). We will brief you on your challenge there.

At the end of the race we will celebrate our victory with a traditional medieval meal – Meat and Mead. The beers are kindly provided by our sponsor: London – Boat Quay.

3) COMMITTEE COMINGS AND GOINGS

I am delighted to let you know that Pam is heading back to her former role on the Committee as our International Rep. She takes on this familiar job at a very busy time as she is already planning and organising our next oveseas trip to Hong Kong. Please give her every support.

Her change of role has led to a vacancy for a new Social Secretary to work alongside Natalia and I’m pleased to let you know that Jo has kindly volunteered and been appointed. Jo has been with the team for a little over 2 years, she always has a smile and is fun to be around. She’s an excellent paddler and has always given 100% in terms of paddling and by wearing fantastic costumes to events! She certainly knows the meaning of: Party Hard, Paddle Harder! We certainly look forward to her ideas and vibrancy for our social activities in the coming year.

Paul (our Team Manager) has also informed me that Andy has decided to step down as our Men’s Captain. I will let Andy explain:

Dear Paul,

The time has come for me to step down as Men’s Captain and allow someone with the time and energy to take our Men’s team to the next level, which it undoubtedly will do this year.

On Monday I will be taking a 6 week assignment with a humanitarian organisation and will be working around the Burma/Thailand border with the indigenous tribal groups before heading back to Singapore early in June. I will then most likely be going to the UK for a few weeks to see family, it’s been over a year since I’ve been able to make a visit back. Of course, this will mean missing the next 3 races, at least, with my commitment after that uncertain at this stage.

I have a feeling of enormous satisfaction to see how the team has grown over the last 6 years. It’s sometimes easy to forget the achievements and leaps forward we have made and it’s very much down to a solid core of long standing team mates who have created a ‘standard’ for newer paddlers to follow in terms of attitude, commitment and the way we present ourselves to the wider dragon boat community.

Naturally, I will continue to paddle when I can and contribute where I can in the future and lend my full support and help to whoever takes over representing our men.

Thank you for all the help, support and friendship extended by you, our committee and paddlers over the last 6 years. Although you will be out of sisight for the next couple of months you certainly won’t be out of mind.

Very best regards,

Andy

Paul has followed up with the following comments:

As our Men’s Captain goes off for another intrepid photographic adventure, we don’t say goodbye, but come back soon mate. Andy has been in this role for over 6 years, he came in at a time when the team was ready to really move forward, and he was instrumental in our achievement of this. He has supported me with unwavering dedication and enthusiasm, sharing the same vision and beliefs of the team. He has been rock solid as both the Men’s Captain, and as our team Vice Captain, always stepping in to attend meetings, run training, as well as so much more (our fantastic garden party would never have happened without Andy, for example). He will be very sorely missed by all, and I particularly feel my best friend and ‘Wing Man’ for so many years wont be around for a while. Thank you Andy for everything, we’ll see you soon buddy!

Paul

I’m sure the whole team will join with me to thank Andy for his dedication and commitment to the team over the last six years and to wish him every success with his latest travels and creative projects.

If you would be interested in being considered or nominated for the role of Men’s Captain, as a first step please have a word with Paul (Team Manager) and informally let him know your interest so that he can share more insights about the role and the expectations andresponsibilities.

All the best,

1) TAIWAN OR HONG KONG?

After our great experiences in Macau and Penang last year and in Korea in 2011, the British dragons are again looking to join one of the international dragon boat races in the region!

At the beginning of the year we shared our plan to go to Taiwan and join the Taipei international dragon boat races in June. A large group of people registered for this race, which is great!

Based on the latest information the Taiwan races are scheduled for Sunday 9th June and Wednesday 12th June (a public holiday in Taiwan to celebrate the dragon boat festival!). This would assume that we will need to take 4 days of leave in order for us to participate in this race.

At the same time we would like to propose the Hong Kong International Dragon boat Carnival as an alternative to the Taiwan race.

This looks like an great opportunity to go away with the team, with only 1 or 2 days leave needed and todo lots of races in a very competitive and international field! And a great party afterwards

- Race: Hong Kong International Dragon boat festival 2013

- Location: Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong

- Dates: Friday 21 June until Sunday 23 June

- Race distances: 250m and 500m

- Race categories: Open, Mixed and Women + a Fancy Costume race

- Sunday night race dinner & party

For both the HK and Taiwan races, please assume flight prices will range between SGD 300-450 depending on timing and availability. There is a possibility that accommodation in HK will be provided by the organization, but this is yet to be confirmed.

Since we only recently came to know of the Hong Kong race we’ll have to move fast so please let us know whether you would prefer Taiwan/Hong Kong/Either/Neither using the following registration form before Saturday 13th April:

www.britishdragonboat.com/overseas/

(*Please note that to race with the team overseas you must have raced at least once with the team in a Singapore event).

We will come back to you as soon as possible with more information based on your feedback

(My thanks to Pam who has been covering the International Rep. role for her research and for providing the above information).

1) ST. GEORGE MEETS THE DRAGON (BOAT)

In April Saint George’s Day is celebrated in England and we’ve decided this is a great opportunity to bring this traditional English celebration to Singapore and to give it a modern twist with some medieval revelry.
What: ….. St. George’s Paddle and BBQ
Where:….. Kallang at 10.30am (NO Sunday morning training on that day!)
When:….. Sunday 21st April 2013
Price:….. $20 (payable to the Social Secretaries at training)

At the end of the race we will celebrate our victory with a traditional medieval meal – Meat and Mead!*

All you need to do is register via: www.britishdragonboat.com/stgeorge/

Please resgister YES/NO before Tuesday 16 April 2013.

* Of course learned hagiologists have for centuries debated whether St George was in fact a vegetarian. Rumours abound that whilst Crusaders, Ladies and Nobles would extravagantly feast on roast hog, disembowled swan (with apple cinnamon relish), pigeon pie or similar meaty delicacies, St George would eschew the weighty platters. Instead he could often be spotted chatting up a fair maiden in the kitchen whilst skillfully wielding his sword to rustle up a potato salad or to prepare spinnach leaves to create a hearty “tart spinnage”. In view of this the Social Secretaries will certainly be providing some vegetarian choices at the feasting in honour of his enlightened lifestyle!
<!--
2) CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE

Here is a message from Paul Robinson (Team Captain/Manager)

“I wanted to let you know that Rob Cooke has had to step down from his role as International Rep. He would like to concentrate on getting his health back to normal (and I know he wants to be back in a boat soon).

In the interim our Ex International Rep, Pam Ooms has been helping out in this role. She has indicated that she’s willing to step into this role again permanently, being fully knowledgeable of our team requirements, in regard to the interaction with other teams, especially the IDBC (International Dragon Boat Community) committee meetings and she previously arranged our overseas trips. If you would like to put your name forward for this role also please inform the Team Captain / Manager. If not then Pam will move to the International role, and her position as Social Secretary will become vacant.

The PA Race will be held on the weekend of 27th and 28th April 2013. The final details for this race are still not confirmed and we’re not sure whether we’ll be racing on Saturday, Sunday or both days yet! But as it’s coming up we need to know who is available to race ASAP so that when the details are finalised we can get our registration in quickly! Please register online by Friday, 5th April (indicating any day you are not available in the message box).

www.britishdragonboat.com/pa2013/

Please note that as with all registrations you need to register YES/NO for your participation (so even if you are not taking part this year please take a moment to register a “NO” so that we know!).

2) BRUSH UP ON YOUR VARNISHING SKILLS

The gunwales and seats on the boats are looking a bit ruddy from exposure to the sun and water so Gill has decided that a re-varnish is called for.

We’ll have a varnishing session immediately after training at 10.30am on Sunday 14th April.

If you’re bristling with indignation about the poor state of the woodwork then grab a brush and lend a hand!

If you don’t feel confident enough with your painting skills then we can find you less exacting tasks with masking tape, sandpaper and opening tins to be getting on with with. And if you really don’t feel like getting dust or paint on yourself or working up a sweat at all then we also have one or two “Supervisory” roles on offer – this basically involves standing in the shade and pointing from time to time as you offer key motivational phrases such as “Look, you’ve missed a bit…” or “Careful, it’s dripping…” (and the only can you’ll be need for this role is a chilled can of beer in your hand as you, er, watch paint dry!).

If you’d like to volunteer for this “Varnish Squad” then please drop me an email to:

secretary@britishdragonboat.com

… and I will add your name to Gill’s list.

See you at training,

Day One:
The British Dragons Singapore team arrived at Day One of the MR500 regatta at Lower Seletar Reservoir with a point to prove, and walked away with an enormous amount to be proud of heading into Day Two. Every British Dragons crew that raced on Day One made a final race – two grand finals and one minor final, beating a number of traditional race day foes including many expat teams and strong university teams. The Premier Mixed 22 Crew, Expat A Boat and Expat B boat paddled longer, harder and deeper than ever over a shortened 400m race to produce some of the team’s most complete performances.

Mixed Premier Crew – In the first race of the day for the British Dragons, the Mixed Premier crew woke up its competitors with a spectacular 50m final surge to take first place by about a third of a boat length, over a second ahead of their nearest rivals. They repeated the feat with another outstanding charge in the semis to come second by a whisper, slicing three seconds off their heat time to record 1:48:0 the team’s fastest time of the day – and beating one of Singapore’s best university teams by 0.7 of a second in the process. Though the crew didn’t medal in the grand final, the British Dragons were the ONLY Singapore expat team make the medal race against very strong uni squads – a tremendous achievement for the first race meet of the year.

Expat Community Mixed Crew – The Brits A boat’s unwavering focus, maintenance and strong line charges to win by nearly a second in their heat at 1:53:4 and storm into the expat category grand final where they eventually took silver – and the team’s first medals of the weekend. Victory over many of last year’s leading crews was the icing on the cake in the expat category for the Brits.
The Brits B boat showed guts on the water, starting with a strong heat against three A-boats and recording a speedy 1:54:6 time. After a fantastic race in the minor final, the B boat suffered a heartbreaking loss on the line to our international regatta partners, the German A team, by just 0.1 of a second. The crew also beat a A-team competitors on the way through to the minor final, showing that once again the Brits will be setting the bar for expat crews in 2013.

Day 2:
With a taste of bling on Day One, the Brits arrived bright and early looking to continue a run of smashing form.
Four crews raced on Day Two: Premier Ladies A, Premier Ladies B, Inter-Club Open and Senior Open (better known as The Old Farts… later proven to be the Fast Farts!). The exceptional performances from Day One spilled into Day Two – three of the crews went on to race in grand finals.
Ladies A and B crews – For the first time, the British Dragons entered two ladies boats in the field – a sure sign of the Brits’ traditional strength in ladies events and of strong competition for the year ahead. After earning the right to race again after their heat, Ladies B turned in a gutsy and vastly improved repechage race.
The fantastic performances of several lady paddlers in their first regatta bodes well for 2013. Ladies A boat kicked off their campaign with a strong win in their first heat. The British Ladies remained cool to cross the line in convincing first place. Though the British Ladies didn’t medal in the grand final, the Brits are now just two seconds away from the fastest crew in Singapore in only the first meet of the year. This is something to celebrate! And a very achievable goal for our outstanding ladies paddlers this year. With race-hardened experience and a rising set of newly-blooded paddlers, competition for ladies boat seats promises to be fierce for May’s DBS regatta.

Senior Open Crew – The Senior Open crew didn’t let two near-starts-interrupted-by-the-weather crack their composure, turning in excellent performances despite a full dance card of final races as part of other crews. The newly-christened ‘Old Farts’ boat proved themselves to be anything but, placing second in their heat and heading straight into the grand final. Race rules stipulated that paddlers must be forty, which of course was difficult to prove given everyone in the ‘senior’ crew looks and paddles like they are 21 years old. One crew member was even interrogated by race marshalls – and disbelieving teammates later – about his age. The broken schedule was no issue as the Fast Farts paddled their way to a very respectable fourth in the grand final…
Inter-Club Open – …. only to line straight back up in the next grand final boat! In what became a recurring theme, Brits continually lined up for final races, sometimes back to back, and maintained both mental and physical stamina throughout – a testament to our coach’s rigorous race training regime. The gents got their chance to shine in the Inter-Club Open, posting the fastest time for the Brits of 1.48 over 400m in their heat to earn their place in the grand final. Competition was extremely strong in the Inter-Club with hardened expat, university and community crews doing battle.
That didn’t stop the men’s team walking away with a hard-fought bronze medal for their efforts after a truly spectacular line charge that left supporters hoarse, and charted the beginning of a very strong men’s crew for 2013.
Congrats gentlemen!

Race Weekend Stats:
7 boats entered in 20-crew and 10-crew races
5 grand final races, 1 minor final race
Silver medal (Expat Community)
Bronze medal (Inter-Club Open)
Guts, glory, sunburn, aching muscles (everyone)
